Precautionary measures at work on charging system

Before making any works on charging system, it is necessary to familiarize with the following security measures:

  1. Never disconnect the battery or a tension regulator when the engine and the generator work.
  2. Never close the excitement plug the generator or the cable fixed on it on weight.
  3. Never confuse wires of a regulator of tension.
  4. Never include a tension regulator if it is connected to weight (instant damage).
  5. Never remove the generator if the battery is not disconnected from a contour.
  6. At installation of the battery watch, that the minus plug was connected to weight.
  7. Never use the indicator of tension which is connected directly in a household network (110 or 220 In). Use only the indicator for 12 Century.
  8. If the battery is charged in the established condition by the charger, both cables of the battery should be disconnected. The positive plug of the charger connect to the positive plug of the battery, and the negative plug of the charger with the negative plug of the battery.
  9. The wrong connection of wires leads to destruction of the rectifier and a tension regulator.

Check of the established generator

At normal movement the lamp of control of a charge should go out. Otherwise, malfunction consists in the generator or a tension regulator. First check electric connections of the generator.

Check, whether correctly will pull a driving belt. Further check can be carried out only on the removed generator.

Removal and installation


  1. Disconnect a cable of weight of the battery.
  2. From a reverse side of the generator disconnect the cable tip. Disconnect a wire from the separate plug.
  3. Weaken a natyazhitel of a driving belt as it was described in Head the Current leaving and service and weaken both bolts of fastening of the generator.
  4. Press the generator inside and remove a belt.
  5. Take out a bolt of fastening of the generator on the bottom party and take out the generator. Installation of the generator is carried out in return sequence. Enclose a belt in grooves of a belt pulley and wring out the generator in a suspension bracket outside. Holding the generator in this situation, tighten a bolt of a tension bracket.
  6. Check a tension of a belt and if necessary adjust, as it is described in the corresponding chapter.

Generator repair

The generator and the regulator connected to it do not need to be regulated or repaired, if there is no necessary experience. The generator not charging the battery can be exchanged on new, having handed over thus the old., For example, replacement of brushes, it is possible to make small repair in a workshop. Bearings of the generator have long-term greasing and do not demand maintenance. Keep a generator surface clean and do not allow hit on it of water or other solvents. Brushes of the generator slide on smooth contact rings and consequently have very big service life. Check of brushes needs generator removal. If you understand generators, dismantling is described further.


Perform the following works, being guided by an illustration below. On an illustration the Bosch generator which is established on cars with the engine of 2.0 l is shown. On the carburetor engine the Magnetti-Marelli generator is established. The main difference consists in lack of a plate of fastening as the bearing is pressed directly in a bearing board. It should be considered in the following description.

  1. Unscrew a nut from a shaft of an anchor and remove from a shaft a remenny pulley, and also the fan and a remote washer (if is available). The shaft when easing can be held the old maple belt imposed on a remenny pulley, and clamped in a vice. For removal of a belt pulley it is possible to use two - or a trekhzakhvatny stripper. It is necessary to remember that the remenny pulley is defined for this engine.
  2. Remove from a shaft a segment shponka.
  3. Unscrew and take out a regulator together with a shchetkoderzhatel.
  4. Mark a board of the driving bearing and the case on opposite places and turn out from the case both coupling a bolt. Separate a back cover of the bearing from a lobby. For this purpose it is possible to knock slightly on a forward cover with a polymeric hammer.
  5. Establish a board of the bearing and an anchor under a press and remove an anchor a trekhzakhvatny stripper. At a vypressovka bolts of a plate of fastening can escape. Therefore surely watch, that three captures of a stripper were established under a basic plate of fastening, and not just under a bearing board. If it is necessary to remove the bearing from a board, weaken bolts on inside and выпрессуйте the bearing.
  6. Wring out the bearing from the end of contact rings of an anchor. If to use for this purpose a stripper, it is necessary to establish it under an internal holder of the bearing.
  7. Otpayayte a payment of diodes from a stator. For this purpose take wires in soldering places between a stator and a soldering iron nippers which will be serves for heat removal. Diodes should not overheat.
  8. Diodes of the rectifier should act in film, if there are corresponding adaptations and appropriate experience.
  9. If there is an experience, check details as follows.

Check of brushes and shchetkoderzhatel


  1. Check reliability of contact of brushes with contact rings.
  2. Check mobility of brushes in shchetkoderzhatel, if necessary clear shchetkoderzhatel means of "Tri".
  3. If the acting part of a brush is worn-out to the boundary line, it is necessary to solder in new brushes. On the Bosch generator the acting length should make 10 mm; on the Magnetti-Marelli generator of 5 mm. For measurement use a ruler.

Anchor check

If contact rings are polluted or greased, they should be wiped a rag of "Tri" moistened in means. It is possible to polish available grooves with very small emery paper.


  1. For check of isolation put щупы an ohmmeter to the core of an anchor and contact rings. If the indication is not equal to infinity, the anchor should be replaced. Put щупы to an anchor, as is shown in an illustration below.

  1. To check an anchor winding on current passing, put both щупа to contact rings. The device should show any resistance. If the ohmmeter shows infinity, means there is a break if on the contrary, means, short circuit. The ohmmeter is connected, as is shown in an illustration below. At both malfunctions it is necessary to replace an anchor, however establish the new generator as repair eventually will cost dearer better.

Stator check

At short circuit the reason can be found on strong heating of the damaged place. Otherwise it is necessary to connect one щуп an ohmmeter to the stator core, and another щуп serially to three wires of a stator, as is shown in an illustration below.

The device should show infinity. For stator check on current passing, connect one after another three cables of a stator with each other in pairs. If the device shows nothing, the current does not proceed. Thus put щупы, as is shown in an illustration below.

Check of diodes

Exact check of diodes on tension of a transmission and definition of a locking current possibly only by means of the special device, and this check should be carried out in a workshop. Fast check can be carried out, having connected one after another equipped with a current source an ohmmeter between each diode and a payment of diodes. Watch indications. They should be either small, or big. Change polarity of an ohmmeter. Being small resistance should become big, high resistance should become small.


On an illustration assembly diagram of the generator is shown, it is necessary to be guided by it at assembly.


  1. Collect a board of the driving bearing. For this purpose press the bearing the party with a micronotch to a rotor. On the Bosch generator under it the washer should be established. Impose a plate of fastening and fix bolts (only Bosch).
  2. Establish an anchor in a bearing board. Thus well arrange a board and press an anchor.
  3. If it was necessary отпаивать wires, they should be soldered into place. Thus use tweezers for heat removal that diodes did not overheat.
  4. Check inside of a stator and to take aside all badly laid wires that they did not concern an anchor.
  5. Insert through an opening in a cover of the bearing of brushes a small delay to raise brushes from rings when the cover is established. Put on a board of the bearing of contact rings a stator and a board of the driving bearing, thus it is necessary to check, that brushes were raised over rings the inserted wire (see an illustration below). As the provision of brushes is visible badly, for this work it is necessary to be reserved by patience. When the board of the bearing of contact rings will sit down, take out a delay. Screw a board of the bearing of contact rings.

  1. Put on a remote ring and the fan (Magnetti-Marelli) a shaft of an anchor and put on a remenny pulley. Tighten a nut with effort of 45-55 N • m on the Bosch generator or with effort of 70-90 N • m on Magnetti-Marelli. For this purpose the remenny pulley can be clamped in a vice with sponges from soft metal.


On the Primera models the starter with compulsory inclusion of a gear wheel which corresponds to engine capacity is established. The starter of the engine of 1.6 l has a direct drive, i.e. capacity a starter is transferred directly on a starter gear wheel. Cars with the engine of 2.0 l have a starter on which lowering transfer for strengthening of the starting moment is established at the same size of a starter. This starter is made also by Magnetti-Marelli firm.

Removal and starter installation

Exact check of a starter should be made at the stand in an electrotechnical workshop. For this purpose it is necessary to remove a starter:


  1. Disconnect a cable of weight of the battery.
  2. Lift a forward part of the car.
  3. Disconnect electric connections from a reverse side of a starter.
  4. Weaken fastening bolts on the case of a flywheel or the converter of a torque and take out a starter.
  5. Installation is carried out in return sequence. Watch correctness of connection of cables.

  1. Weaken bolts from the forward party of the traction relay and disconnect the inclusion lever to remove the relay.
  2. Weaken bolts and nuts from a reverse side of a starter and uncover the collector party. Remove the starter case from an anchor and a forward board of the bearing.
  3. Take out brushes from holders and remove other details from a reverse side of a starter. Remember an exact arrangement of separate elements (illustration).
  4. Remove other details, being guided by an illustration.
  5. Brushes are soldered to polar coils and can be replaced only with replacement of all case of polar coils.

Check of details of a starter


Brushes should have length of 5 mm (with lowering transfer) or 3.5 mm (with a direct drive). For measurement of brushes it is possible to use a calliper.


  1. Check, that brushes easily moved to the directing. If it is required, wipe sides of brushes the rag moistened in gasoline or process a file. If it is required - replace brushes.
  2. Check a tension of springs of brushes a dynamometer which is established at right angle to a spring. The result should correspond to value in Specifications at the beginning of Head.


The good collector should have a smooth surface without sinks and the scorched places.


  1. Wipe a collector the rag moistened with gasoline, at the same time turning a starter. If it is required, it can be processed an emery paper (with grain 500-600), as is shown in an illustration below. To process strongly worn-out collector, it can be pierced.
To clear a collector a strip of an emery paper (1). To clamp an anchor in various positions in a vice, to clear on all circle.
  1. Previously it is necessary to measure diameter of a collector by a calliper. If measured (see an illustration below) diameter already comes nearer to minimum admissible value of 28.8 mm, it is necessary to replace a collector. The anchor for a pro-point is clamped on the lathe, and at rotation with big turns the metal layer acts in film. Remove only the necessary quantity of a material.

  1. In summary saw through cracks between collector segments on depth 0.5 - 0.8 mm. The cloth should be inserted by Nozhovochnoye into cracks horizontally to cut through on all to length, i.e. do not warp a cloth. Then polish a collector with a small nazhdachka that there was a shine. The most frequent malfunctions in a collector are caused by short circuit in an anchor (the scorched rounds of a collector), otherwise it should work long.

Polar coils


  1. Best of all check polar coils an ohmmeter which joins between positive contact of the polar coil and the starter case, as is shown in an illustration below. On an illustration it is shown by an ohmmeter with an internal source of a current. The ohmmeter of other design should be connected to the battery at first. At this check it is checked, whether polar coils on weight become isolated. If the ohmmeter shows any value, the starter case with polar coils should be replaced.

  1. At the following check the ohmmeter is connected between two contacts of brushes, as is shown in an illustration below. At this check it is supervised, whether the current between brushes proceeds. If indications are not present, it is necessary to replace the case of a starter.

For check of a winding of an anchor the special device, a so-called buzzer is required. If this device is not present, it is possible to check an old anchor, having temporarily replaced it with the new. Never try отрихтовать a pognuty anchor or to process it, i.e. grind or remove agnails.


Strongly broken bearings having lateral люфт, should be replaced. It is for this purpose best of all to measure external diameter of a shaft of an anchor and internal diameter of an opening of the bearing. If the difference between two sizes exceeds 0.2 mm, выпрессуйте the old plug, put the new plug for 30 minutes in pure impellent oil and press in a bearing board. Then grind the plug while the shaft will not have a gap 0.03 - 0.10 mm.

Starter drive

Check, that a teeth of a gear wheel of a starter was in a good condition. The gear wheel should move easily on gear connection of a shaft of an anchor. The free wheeling should be only in one party, in other party the gear wheel should be blocked. If it is required, replace all drive. In this case also check a gear wreath of a starter on existence of damages.

Traction relay

The traction relay is not subject to repair. For check of coils of the traction relay it is necessary to connect the 2nd volt battery to S and M plugs on the relay. The pusher of the relay should move. Repeat the same check, but this time connect the battery to the plug "M" and the case. The pusher should start moving and at wire connection to the plug "M" to keep. On an illustration 7. m is shown, where on the relay there are plugs.

Starter assembly

Assembly of a starter is carried out in return dismantling of sequence.


  1. Slightly grease gear gearing of a shaft of an anchor and the bearing of the lever of inclusion with greasing.
  2. Slightly oil the bearing and a gear wheel.
  3. After assembly clamp a starter in a vice and connect to plugs of the traction S and M relay the 12-volt battery, as is shown in an illustration below.

  1. The starter gear wheel when giving a current jumps out forward on a persistent ring (3), however between a gear wheel and a persistent ring there should be a gap. Measure this gap flat shchupy or a calliper. If the gap which was between shooters more than 3 mm, something in a starter is established not so.
